Introduction to Maryland scholarships

The state of Maryland is home about 55 public universities, two-year community colleges, and private undergraduate and graduate universities combined. Whether you’re a high school senior looking at attending a Illinois college or university, or you’re a current college student at one of Maryland, many institutions, this post highlights many great scholarships and resources for you to take advantage of. 

Let's go over a few of Maryland's best scholarships for students.

Maryland scholarships to apply for

  • Amount: $1,000

    Deadline: March 31, June 30, September 30, December 31

    While our quarterly scholarship is not exclusive to Maryland students, it’s a great no-essay scholarship to apply for in addition to the scholarships on this list! Open to high school, college, and graduate students of all years. DACA students are also encouraged to apply.

  • Amount: $25,000

    Deadline: Monthly

    Details: This monthly scholarship is open to all college students!  Just fill out one simple registration form.

  • Amount: $1,000

    Deadline: January 10

    Eligibility:  Students must possesses a novice class or higher amateur radio license and studying toward a Bachelor of Science degree in any field of engineering. Financial need must be demonstrated.

  • Amount: Amount Varies

    Deadline:  March 1

    Eligibility: The CollegeBound Foundation awards over 500 scholarships and grants annually.  Be sure to check each individual schoalrship as deadlines and majors vary.

  • Amount: $500 

    Deadline: March 1

    Eligibility: One scholar will be chosen from each of the following areas: Baltimore City or Baltimore County. Applicant must: have a cumulative 2.5 GPA or better; submit SAT (CR+M) scores and demonstrate financial need.

  • Amount: $1,000 (up to 5 awarded)

    Deadline: March 1

    Eligibility: Student must Demonstrate a financial need and have achieved a minimum 3.0 overall GPA.  Scholarships are awarded to deserving undergraduate students pursuing a career related to School Business or Education.

  • Amount: up to $2,500

    Deadline: April 1

    Eligibility: Financial assistance available to qualified candidates planning to teach in the Maryland public school system. Candidates must have an undergraduate degree in liberal arts, sciences, or mathematics, and be pursuing a master’s degree in education.

  • Amount: $2,500

    Deadline: April 15

    Eligibility:  Applicants must be a graduating Illinois high school senior and a minimum cumulative unweighted high school GPA of 3.0.
    A household income at or below the Low Income Level. Open to ALL MAJORS

  • Amount: 40 awards of $2,500

    Deadline: April 15

    Eligibility: Scholarships will be awarded based on applicants’ academic record, demonstrated leadership, commitment to school and community activities and experience in a work environment.

  • Amount: $1,500

    Deadline:  April 15

    Eligibility: Are you an outstanding student working on a high-school newspaper?  This scholarship may be for you!  Ideal candidate plans to study journalism after high school.

  • Amount: $5,000 to $10,000 (60 awards available)

    Deadline: April 17

    Eligibility:  Students must be high school seniors or current college undergraduate students with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent).

  • Amount: Up to $22,100

    Deadline: June 1

    Eligibility: Must be a Maryland resident with 2.5 Minimum GPA and currently in high school.

  • Amount: up to $3,000 for up to 4 years

    Deadline: June 1

    Eligibility: Student must demonstrate financial need and be a currently enrolled high school senior OR currently enrolled at an eligible two-year or four-year Maryland institution as a full-time (12 credits/semester) degree-seeking undergraduate student.

  • Amount: up to $12,948

    Deadline: June 1

    Eligibility:  The Maryland Senatorial Scholarship is offered to Maryland residents who plan to pursue a postsecondary credential full-time (12+ credits undergraduate or 9+ credits graduate per semester) or part-time (6-11 credits undergraduate or 6-8 credits graduate per semester).

  • Amount: $500

    Deadline: June 1

    Eligibility: Students receive awards of $500 granted to Maryland residents attending a private career school in Maryland.

  • Amount: up to $29,600

    Deadline: July 1

    Eligibility: The State of Maryland Delegate Scholarship is offered by the local State Delegates to Maryland residents who plan to pursue a post-secondary credential full-time (12+ credits per semester) or part-time (6-11 credits per semester) at a two-year or four-year Maryland college, university or private career school​.

  • Amount: up to $8,000

    Deadline: November 10

    Eligibility: This scholarship provides financial assistance to residents of the Washington D.C. area interested in attending designated community colleges in the area.

  • Amount: up to $2,000

    Deadline: December 31

    Eligibility: Are you a community college student and thinking about transferring to a 4-year program?  This scholarship is designed to assist and encourage transfer students from Maryland community colleges to attend a 4-year institution within the state to complete their bachelor's degrees.

  • Amount: up to $5,000

    Deadline: Varies by each school

    Eligibility: The Graduate and Professional Scholarship Program provides need-based financial assistance to students attending a Maryland school of medicine, dentistry, law, pharmacy, social work, or nursing. 

  • Amount: $400 to $3,000

    Deadline: Varies

    Eligibility: Did you miss filing your FAFSA or MSFAA by March 1, don't worry, this grant can help.  You and your parents (if you are a dependent student) must be Maryland residents. You must enroll at a two-year or four-year Maryland college or university as a full-time (12+ credits per semester), degree seeking, undergraduate student.

A great resource for Maryland students comes from CentralScholarship.org and the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) at the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC)  Students can access a lot of great resources on these sites by completing the online form to apply.

According to the Department of Education, Maryland residents owe $35.9 billion in federal student loan debt with student borrowers, owing on average $42,280.  49.0% of these loan borrowers are under the age of 35 and 13.7% of all state residents have student loan debt.

When looking for ways to fund your higher education journey, remember that scholarships allow you to take fewer loans. Be sure to apply for as many as you’re eligible. You will surely want to take advantage of any merit & need-based scholarships from colleges in Maryland.
