Scholarship Description

The One Family Scholarship Program was established by the Massachusetts Legislature to assist heads of households to achieve their academic goals by offering the opportunity for a permanent path out of poverty through the pursuit of higher education. Recipients of this scholarship receive an integrated network of services through the non-profit organization, One Family, Inc., whose mission is to serve residents of the Commonwealth who are low-income and homeless, or have experienced homelessness within the prior year

Scholars also receive a scholarship that helps to offset both direct costs of college (tuition, fees) and indirect costs of college (books, supplies, and living expenses). All awards are individualized based on need and program of study and are designed to reduce or eliminate the need for student loans.

All applicants must be:

  • A single head of household (any gender) with dependent children under 18

  • Living with a family income level below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (see chart)

  • Endorsed by a Community Partner (see Community Partners page) OR referred by two organizations

  • An entering or returning student at an approved accredited undergraduate institution in Massachusetts

  • A resident of Massachusetts and a United States citizen or Permanent Resident

  • Enrolled in a degree granting program track (either associate or bachelor’s)

The One Family Scholars application is typically open twice per year. When an application period is forthcoming, we will display all dates and deadlines here, so please check back.
